CCIC's role in coalitions

CCIC sits on the Halifax Initiative Co-ordinating Committee and monitors various activities (such as the Tobin Tax, Export Development Canada, debt cancellation, financial architecture and aid effectiveness). To find out more about the work of the Halifax Initiative click here.

Policy work in the area of peacebuilding and humanitarian assistance is increasing for CCIC. The Council is currently participating in the activities of the Canadian Peacebuilding Co-ordinating Committee (CPCC) and the Policy Action Group on Emergency Response (PAGER). To find out more go to the CPCC web site.

Through the Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability (CNCA) and the Ethical Trading Action Group (ETAG) CCIC continues its work on Corporate Accountability. For more information on the CNCA visit the Halifax Initiative Web site. Further information on ETAG can be found at the Maquila Solidarity Network web site.

Created in the context of Canada's anti-terrorist legislation, which affects the charitable sector and civil liberties, CCIC supports the work of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG). The Group includes, among others, development NGOs, faith communities, labour groups, environmental organizations and rights advocates.

Through the Americas Policy Group, CCIC is part of the Common Frontiers coalition. Promoting a fair trade agenda in the Americas is the main focus of its work. Common Frontiers is the Canadian representative of the Hemispheric Social Alliance. For more information on Common Frontiers visit its web site.

CCIC is part of the Global Treatment Access Group (GTAG). GTAG is a group of Canadian civil society organizations sharing information and undertaking joint activities aimed at improving access to essential medicines and other aspects of care, treatment and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and other health needs in developing countries.

The Trade and Investment Research Project (TIRP) is a coalition of Canadian civil society organizations, including CCIC, working on issues related to the broad realm of international trade agreements under negotiation and implementation including, but not limited to the WTO, the GATS, the FTAA, and the NAFTA.

The Canadian Coalition on Climate Change and Development (C4D), formed in 2006, brings international development perspectives to climate change dialogue in Canada. C4D also seeks to develop knowledge and capacity in the international development community to address the global challenges associated with climate change and development.

The Canadian Global Campaign for Education (CGCE) promotes the universal right to education in Canada’s international policies and programs. Launched in 2004 as a broad based coalition of non-governmental organizations, unions, religious groups, education and research organizations, CGCE members promote the universal right to education through the internationally recognized Education for All goals. For more on the CGCE, visit: www.campaignforeducationcanada.org.

CCIC is also active in the Canadian Food Security Policy Group (FSPG), a coalition of Canadian civil society organizations working on policy issues that affect food security in developing countries including aid, trade and the multilateral system.

Mapping study of Canadian CSO Policy Coalitions

A new mapping study of Canadian CSO Policy Coalitions is now available.  The study, “Canadian civil society organization coalitions’ governance, capacity and agendas – Common challenges, shortfalls and their implications” was commissioned as a resource to support strategic reflection and discussion in CCIC and the sector on current issues and capacities in coalition work.  The report draws from interviews with individuals from 24 different Canadian coalitions focused on issues related to CCIC’s ten-point agenda.  The report reviews the value added of coalitions in Canada , identifies cross-cutting opportunities and challenges, considers some of the overlaps and gaps in coalition agendas , and draws out implications for CCIC.
