Frequently Asked Questions

Non Discrimination and Inclusion

Dear Ms Ethics is a communication vehicle to disseminate the answers to questions about organizational ethical dilemmas that relate to the CCIC Code of Ethics and Operational Standards.

1. Non Discrimination and Self Definition
Standard 3.6 related to non-discrimination allows organizations to "self-define when it is in compliance with the law." We are a Christian, denominational organization. Representatives on the Board must be Christians and must be members in good standing of one of our churches in Canada. Does the sentence about self-defining fully cover our situation?

2. Non Discrimination and the Law
The Operational Standards expects all members to adopt a policy prohibiting discrimination (S3.6).  Non-discrimination is covered by law so why bother requiring it in the Standards too?

3. Non Discrimination and Appointed Boards
The governing body of our organization is appointed by national agencies. We have no control over who they appoint. They choose people from their own organization and there are few women or minorities in them. As a result we cannot meet the requirement for S3.6 of the Code that expects our organization to have policies prohibiting discrimination and promoting gender equality and participation of disadvantaged groups at all levels of the Organization. Can we be given an exception to this item?
