“Be it resolved that Canada’s official development assistance can be used both to promote poverty reduction and human rights as well as Canadian diplomacy and trade interests.”

Each year, civil society organizations (CSOs) from across the country convene for the Annual CCIC Forum and AGM to discuss, debate and strategize around the most pressing issues for civil society and international development.  This year’s Forum is entitled: “Development and Social Transformation as Shared Responsibility: Building new Bridges and Connections”, and will be a pivotal moment for CSOs across the country to discuss the future of the sector in Canada. Over 150 members of Canadian development organizations, and other development thinkers and practitioners, will be coming together to discuss and work on key issues affecting our sector. And this year we will also be joined by a contingent of emerging leaders in our sector.

One of the key developments in the Canadian aid landscape is the upcoming merger of CIDA and DFAIT. In an effort to foster public discussion and debate on the amalgamation issue and its potential consequences on the direction and effectiveness of international development efforts, the CCIC is organizing a public debate:

When: Wednesday May 22, 2013, starting at 19:00
Where: University of Ottawa, Faculty of Social Sciences Building, Room 2005
Resolution for debate: “Be it resolved that Canada’s official development assistance can be used both to promote poverty reduction and human rights as well as Canadian diplomacy and trade interests.”

Defending the resolution: Lucien Bradet, President-CEO of the Canadian Council on Africa and Paul Hitschfeld, Chair of the Africa Study Group
Opposing the resolution: Hon. John McKay, Member of Parliament for Scarborough – Guildwood and Nipa Banerjee, Visiting Professor at SIDGS, University of Ottawa
