SOS Children's Villages is an international children’s charity, of which SOS Canada is a part. We build families for children in need all over the world. Over 75,000 orphaned and abandoned children are being raised by us, and a million more receive education, medical care, and other support every year.

  

THE POSITION:      Communications and Media Coordinator



POSITION SUMMARY:

The Communications and Media Coordinator will be responsible for supporting fundraising activities at SOS Canada by generating a wide array of content and carrying out public relations and media engagement campaigns to boost awareness of our work. (S)he will accomplish this by working alone, with other SOS Canada team members, and in cooperation with relevant staff from our international head office in Austria and regional offices around the world.

If you have a degree or diploma in a related area of study such as communications, journalism, marketing, or public relations, coupled with a minimum 3 years’ relevant experience, please submit your application, no later than February 9, 2018.

This is a regular, full-time position located in the national office in Ottawa.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

If you are the successful applicant you will support the organization’s fundraising by taking on the following:

Communications Activities

  • To support fundraising activities, you will:
    • Research, write and edit content (e.g. topical articles, stories) for the website, external websites, newsletters, annual reports, etc.;
    • Design templates for program reports and newsletters;
    • Design collateral for special events, including sponsorship packages, advertising, signage, programs, and audio-visual presentations;
    • Create specialized digital or printed collateral for fundraising campaigns or major corporate donors; and,
    • Maintain brand compliance and integrity by proof-reading documents and articles, and ensuring appropriate use of logo and other internal and external corporate branding assets.

Public Relations and Media Activities
In concert with fundraising staff and communications consultants when appropriate, you will:

  • Draft media releases, advisories, invitations, briefing notes and provide content and support for speeches and presentations;
  • Help identify and pursue media opportunities in both mainstream and niche publications to communicate the organization’s mission, values and practices in a positive, consistent and credible manner;
  • Monitor media for stories that are potentially harmful to our brand, and coordinate strategic and tactical measures with the international head office’s communications team;
  • Provide timely and engaging social media content to support and promote all public relations efforts (e.g. Twitter, Facebook and Google+); monitor all online conversations and respond when appropriate; and,
  • Perform other duties as required.

REPORTS TO: The President and CEO.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will involve the supervision of contractors, volunteers and/or interns.

WORKPLACE: You will work in our national office located in the Byward Market, Ottawa.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree or diploma in a related area of study such as communications, journalism, marketing, or public relations.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in communications and/or media relations for non-profit, government, marketing/communications consulting, corporate or news organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing engaging and creative content for several different mediums (online, print, multimedia, etc.)
  • Prior work in the not-for-profit sector is preferred.

     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Able to produce clear, compelling writing, with close attention to audience, goals, messaging, tone, and accuracy in a variety of written products
  • Able to manage multiple and sometimes competing priorities and deliver to deadline.
  • Able to tell stories, ask questions and understand what engages different stakeholders and be able to adapt writing to adhere to such.
  • Strong working knowledge of social media applications and best practices for the non-profit sector (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Google+) is preferred.
  • Able to grow and promote the SOS brand, and be proactive in identifying opportunities for future growth.
  • Particular interest in, and existing knowledge of, international development issues is a significant asset.
  • Exceptional time management skills are required, including a high level of detail orientation and accuracy.
  • Analytical thinker and decisive, with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Entrepreneurial, innovative, and self-motivated, as well as a strong contributor in a team environment.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Strong graphic design skills with experience using Adobe InDesign to create stand-out printed and digital collateral.
  • Thrives in a small office environment.
  • Fluent in English; French an advantage; other languages (in particular, Spanish) helpful.
